Coastal barrens are exposed heathlands with rocky, thin soils, stunted vegetation, salt air and generally treeless landscapes. This area corresponds to the action of the lungs, the skin barrier and Wei Qi in the body - our protective, defense energy in relation to the external environment. The Lungs are the organ associated with sadness and grief, the capacity for release and exchange, and the ability to uphold and communicate values without becoming too brittle or rigid. The plants found here are hearty, often with succulent-like leaves and tough barrier layers, managing the relationship between dry ground and harsh, salt air conditions.
